What does the screw consist of?

A separator screw is a rotating element that is used to move and separate materials into solid and wet fractions within a separator. It consists of several major components including:

The auger turns (or auger feathers) are the main element of an auger, which is a spiral blade formed from a metal band. The coils are arranged around the centre axis of the auger and are used to move material along the length of the auger. They are one of the components of the separator screw; their design and quality have a significant influence on the performance of the entire device. Depending on the type and model of the separator, the coils can have different shapes and sizes.

The function of the coils is to move the product along the screw, to separate and process it. As the auger rotates, the coils catch the product and move it from one end of the auger to the other. The quality of the coils directly affects the separation process and productivity. Poor quality coils can cause product to not move properly, resulting in reduced separator performance and efficiency.

In order to ensure high throughput and increase the life of the auger, it is important to choose a quality material for the feathers, monitor their condition and replace them in a timely manner.

Feathers also fulfil the function of keeping the product inside the auger and preventing it from falling out during movement.

Feathers are made of different materials depending on the operating conditions of the separator. For low abrasive products stainless steel feathers can be used, and for more aggressive products – feathers coated with nylon, polyurethane, etc.

Separator screws are used in various industries and can have different types of turns, depending on the tasks they perform. Some of the most common types are:

Drilling: used in drilling rigs to move drilling fluids and waste.
Grain: used in agriculture to move grain and other agricultural products.
Cement: used in the construction industry to move cement and other building materials.
Mixing: used for mixing and blending products in the chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries.
Feeding: used to move products from one device to another, such as from a hopper to a separator.

The long cylinder to which the coils are welded is one of the segments of the separator screw. It is usually made of rolled metal and has an elongated cylindrical shape similar to a tube.

The cylinder serves as a base for attaching the feathers. Actually, the auger feathers themselves are manufactured depending on the length of the auger. Each coil is welded to the cylinder at a certain distance from each other, forming a spiral structure that ensures the movement of the material through the auger.

The cylinder as a segment of the separator auger plays an important role in ensuring the strength and reliability of the auger. The quality of the attachment of the coils to the cylinder must be high to avoid the screw from breaking during operation. In addition, the cylinder must be made of a robust material that can withstand aggressive media and wear to guarantee a long life of the auger.
